Mental Maths Strategies Worth Teaching Your Child
These are the specific techniques that help students work faster and more accurately without a calculator. You don't need to teach them all at once — pick one, practise it for a week, then move to the next.
Breaking numbers apart (partitioning) Instead of calculating 47 + 38 from left to right, break it: 40 + 30 = 70, then 7 + 8 = 15, so 85. This is far less error-prone than column addition in your head.
Rounding and adjusting To calculate 99 × 4, round 99 to 100, multiply (400), then subtract 4. This approach turns awkward numbers into easy ones and is extremely useful for NAPLAN word problems involving money, measurement, or quantities.
Doubles and near-doubles Knowing that 7 + 7 = 14 makes 7 + 8 = 15 feel instant. Doubles are a natural stepping stone and most kids pick them up quickly once they've been explicitly pointed out.

Place value understanding A child who understands that 3.6 is three ones and six tenths can estimate, compare, and calculate with decimals far more confidently. This comes up constantly in NAPLAN from Year 5 onward.
Using known facts to find unknown ones If your child knows 5 × 6 = 30, they can work out 6 × 6 = 36 by adding one more group of 6. Teaching this kind of reasoning — rather than treating every multiplication as a separate fact to memorise — builds genuine number sense.
Everyday Activities That Build Numeracy Without the Pressure
You don't need worksheets for any of this. Numeracy is everywhere in daily life, and using it naturally is one of the best ways to build confidence without your child even realising they're practising.
In the kitchen: Ask your child to double or halve a recipe. "We need 3/4 of a cup but I want to make double — how much is that?" This is real fractions and multiplication in a context that makes sense.
At the shops: "We've got $20. We're buying milk for $3.50 and bread for $4.20. How much change should we get?" This mirrors exactly the kind of word problem NAPLAN uses. It also removes the anxiety of a test setting because the stakes are low and the conversation is natural.
With time: "It's 2:45 and we need to leave in 35 minutes. What time is that?" Elapsed time is a genuine NAPLAN topic and most children find it surprisingly tricky.
